Firesheep

I read the article on social networking hacking on readwriteweb.com this evening and was more than a little bit disturbed. I had no idea that there were programs like "firesheep" out there that make it so easy for people to gain access to your online identity. It pretty much gives people instant access you whatever social network you are connected to over a public wifi source.

This article made mention of setting up a Virtual Private Network to prevent this kind of online identity theft. I will be looking into the details of this before connecting at the local coffee shop for sure.

  1. That is scary that someone can gain access to your online identity so quickly. I know that my students don't even think sometimes when they are posting stuff to the internet when I hear them talking in class about their facebook accounts or myspace. If people are easily able to hack into their information I am truly scared for them, because if the wrong person gets their info. who knows. I wish parents would keep a closer eye on what their child is putting out there on the internet for everyone to see.
